Hop Brook

The Hop Brook Valley is a beautiful natural area in western Massachusetts. It's also called the Tyringham Valley. Most of this valley is in the town of Tyringham, Massachusetts, but some of it stretches into the nearby town of Lee. People love to visit this valley because it's a quiet, countryside spot with amazing views and lots of hiking paths.

Exploring the Hop Brook Valley

The bottom of the Hop Brook Valley is about 800 feet (244 meters) above sea level. This means it's quite high up! Mountains surround the valley, reaching heights between 1,000 and 2,000 feet (305 to 610 meters). These mountains are part of the Berkshires, a famous mountain range in Massachusetts.

Mountains and Streams

Right in the middle of the valley flows Hop Brook. This is a small stream that eventually joins the Housatonic River. The Hop Brook Valley meets the Housatonic River Valley where these two waterways connect.

On the south side of the valley, you'll find Jerusalem Road. This road runs along a steep slope called an escarpment. Some of the mountains rising above this side of the valley include Sky Hill, Beartown Mountain, and Mount Wilcox. All these mountains are part of the Beartown State Forest, which is just south of the valley.

Northern Views and High Ponds

To the north of the valley, you can see Mount Baldy. There are also other mountains in this area that form a flat, high land called a plateau. This plateau stretches northward beyond the valley.

On this plateau is Goose Pond. This pond is special because it's the highest body of freshwater in Massachusetts! Below this plateau, Main Road runs parallel to Jerusalem Road, but on the north side of the valley. This road changes its name to Tyringham Road when it enters the town of Tyringham, Massachusetts.

Tyringham's Charm and Famous Trails

The small and charming downtown area of Tyringham, Massachusetts, is located where Main Road (Tyringham Road) meets Jerusalem Road at the southeast end of the valley. Just south of this meeting point, in the center of the valley, is the Tyringham Cobble. This is a very famous and uniquely shaped hill in the area.

The Hop Brook Valley is a popular place for hiking. This is because the famous Appalachian Trail crosses right through it, going from north to south.
