European people started settling in the Hope Valley area between 1882 and 1886. The first settler was George Postans, who owned a property called Hope Valley.

A small community grew there with different kinds of farms. Because of George Postans' property, the area was named Hope Valley. In 1962, Hope Valley was officially recognized as a locality.
