A Look Back: Mandogalup's History

The land where Mandogalup now stands was first called "7 Mile Camp." In 1923, it was officially named "Balmanup" when a townsite was created. There was also a place called Lake Balmanup, which was another name for Mandogalup Swamp.

However, by 1945, people mostly knew the townsite as Mandogalup. So, in 1946, its name was officially changed to Mandogalup. This name comes from an Aboriginal language, but its exact meaning is not known today.

Early Life and Farming

In the past, Mandogalup was a very important farming area. This happened partly because of the Group Settlement Scheme. This plan helped families move to Western Australia and start farms. Many families also came to the area during the war years to avoid the bigger cities like Perth.

The land here, especially near the wetlands, was great for growing food. It was like a "food bowl" for the region. Over time, as more people moved to the area, farming has become less common. This is because the land is now more valuable for building homes and other urban developments.

Community Life and Landmarks

Mandogalup has a strong community feel. It's home to some important places and services that help the people living there.

The Bala Murugan Temple

One of the most notable landmarks in Mandogalup is the Bala Murugan Temple. This temple is a special place of worship for the Tamil Hindu community in Western Australia. These community members have roots in places like Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, and Singapore. The temple helps them connect with their culture and faith.

Local Services: Fire Station

The suburb also has a volunteer fire station. This station is very important, especially during the hot summer months. It has three vehicles and its brave volunteers work hard to keep the community safe from fires.
