Wandi is a suburb located in Perth, Western Australia. It's part of the City of Kwinana and was officially named on March 14, 1978.

Most of Wandi is a "Special Rural" area. This means it's protected to keep its many trees and natural bushland. The land is often divided into large blocks, about 5 acres (2 hectares) each. Some parts of Wandi are even part of the Jandakot Regional Park, a special area for nature.

The Kwinana Freeway forms Wandi's western edge. Near the freeway, an area that used to be market gardens is now becoming a new housing community called Honeywood. Wandi is about 27 kilometers (17 miles) away from Perth city.

The Story Behind Wandi's Name

The suburb of Wandi is named after a respected Aboriginal stockman. A stockman is someone who works with livestock, like cattle and sheep. Wandi was known for moving cattle from Robb Jetty and driving sheep around Cockburn Sound.

For about 40 years in the early 1900s, Wandi worked for Anchorage Butchers. This company was owned by the Copley, Atkinson, and Negus families. During some of this time, Wandi lived at George Atkinson's home in South Fremantle. He helped care for the many racehorses that George Atkinson owned. Wandi passed away in 1955 when he was 76 years old.

Wildlife in Wandi

Wandi is home to various wildlife. In March 2009, a rare animal called a chuditch, also known as a western quoll (Dasyurus geoffroii), was found in Wandi. This small, meat-eating marsupial is very special because it hadn't been seen in the Perth area for almost 20 years. Finding it in Wandi showed that this endangered animal might still be living in the area.

Honeywood Community

In the early 2010s, a new housing area called Honeywood started to grow in Wandi. This community grew quickly, from 782 people in 2006 to 2,854 people by 2016.

Honeywood Primary School was the first school to open in Wandi. It officially welcomed students in 2018. As of 2021, Honeywood Primary School is the only school located in Wandi.
