Hopewell is a community in Bradley County, Tennessee, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering statistics, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city. In 2020, about 2,087 people lived in Hopewell. It is part of the larger Cleveland, Tennessee metropolitan area.

History of Hopewell

The Hopewell community was first settled by European Americans in the early 1820s. At that time, this area was still part of the Cherokee Nation. Hopewell is special because it was home to the first church and the first post office in Bradley County.

How Hopewell Got Its Name

People say the community got its name when the first church was built there. Someone reportedly said, "I hope they do well!" This phrase then became the name for the area.

Candy's Creek Mission

A stream called Candies Creek (originally Candy's Creek) flows through the community. It was named after Henry Candy, a Cherokee person who moved his home near the creek around 1817. The Cherokees used to call this creek "Little Kiuka Creek."

In 1824, the Candy's Creek Mission was started along the creek. Samuel Worcester and William Holland organized it as a Christian mission to help the Cherokees. Both of them were based at the Brainerd Mission in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

A school began at the mission on February 2, 1825. Other schools were also set up nearby soon after. The very first post office in Bradley County was opened in Hopewell in March 1825. William Holland was the postmaster, but the post office closed in April 1826.

On September 25, 1825, the Candy's Creek Presbyterian Church was formed at the mission. This was reportedly the first church in Bradley County. The mission closed in 1838 during the Cherokee removal, which was when the Cherokee people were forced to move from their lands. Important Cherokees who studied at the mission included Jesse Bushyhead, Dennis Bushyhead, and Stephen Foreman.

Historical Marker

A special marker from the Tennessee Historical Commission was put up in 1959. It was placed along State Route 60 to remember the mission station. However, this marker disappeared in the late 1980s when a road called Paul Huff Parkway was built.
