Horace Binney Sargent (June 26, 1821 – January 8, 1908) was an American soldier and politician. He is best known for his service in the American Civil War. After the war, he continued to help soldiers and even ran for governor.
Early Life and Education
Horace Binney Sargent was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1821. His father, Lucius Manlius Sargent, was a writer. His mother was Mary Sarah Binney.
Horace went to Harvard University. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1843. He then studied law at Harvard Law School, finishing in 1845. After that, he became a lawyer in Boston.
Military Career
When the American Civil War began, Horace Binney Sargent joined the Union Army. He became an important helper to General Nathaniel P. Banks. He started as a Lieutenant-Colonel.
Sargent fought in many battles. These included Antietam, South Mountain, and Chancellorsville. In 1864, he became a Colonel. He led the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment.
During a battle, he was seriously wounded. This injury ended his time as a soldier. For his brave service, he was given the honorary rank of Brigadier General.
After the War
After leaving the army, Sargent continued to serve his community. From 1876 to 1878, he led the Massachusetts Department of the Grand Army of the Republic. This was a group for Civil War veterans.
He was also the first president of the Soldiers Home in Chelmsford. This home provided care for soldiers. He stayed on its board until he passed away.
In 1880, he ran for Governor of Massachusetts. He was a candidate for the Greenback Party. Later in life, he moved to California. He lived there with his daughter Elizabeth.
Family Life
Horace Binney Sargent was married to Elizabeth Little Swett. They had four children together:
- Horace Binney Sargent Jr. (1847–1896)
- Elizabeth Hazard Sargent (1850–1920), who married Bowman H. McCalla. He was a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy.
- William Winthrop Sargent (1851–1867), who died when he was young.
- Lucius Manilus Sargent (1848–1893)
Horace Binney Sargent passed away in Santa Barbara, California, in 1908. He was 86 years old.
