Hornitos is a small community in Mariposa County, California, United States. Its name means "Little ovens" in Spanish. It is called a census-designated place, which is a special area defined for gathering population information.
Hornitos is located about 25 miles south of Coulterville. It sits at an elevation of 843 feet above sea level. In 2020, only 38 people lived there. This was a decrease from 75 people in 2010. The town was also shown in the 1962 movie Ride the High Country. In the film, it was the closest town for mining activities in the nearby mountains.

History of Hornitos
The post office in Hornitos first opened in 1856. Its name was originally "Hornitas" but changed to "Hornitos" in 1877. The name "little ovens" came from old Mexican tombstones in the community. These tombstones were built in the shape of small, square bake ovens.
Famous Chocolate Connection
A famous person named Domingo Ghirardelli had a general store in Hornitos. He lived there between 1856 and 1859. During this time, he worked on making his chocolate recipes perfect. You can still see what's left of his old store in the town today.
Historical Landmark Status
Hornitos is recognized as California Historical Landmark #333. This means it is an important historical site in California. In 1973, Hornitos stopped being an official town by state law.

Hornitos is located in the western part of Mariposa County. It is about 18 miles west of Mariposa, which is the main town of the county. The community covers an area of about 1.15 square miles, and all of it is land.
Local Waterways
A stream called Burns Creek flows right through the middle of Hornitos. This creek flows southwest and eventually joins Bear Creek. Bear Creek then flows into the San Joaquin River in Merced County.
