Horrid Henry is the very first book in the super popular Horrid Henry series! It came out in 1994. The book was written by Francesca Simon and the funny pictures were drawn by Tony Ross.

This book is a collection of short stories. They all feature the same characters, especially the mischievous Henry. It's a bit like the old "Just William" books, but with a modern twist!

What Happens in the Book?

Horrid Henry's Perfect Day

Horrid Henry is a boy who loves to be naughty. He throws food, snatches things, and pushes people. He has a younger brother named Perfect Peter. Peter is super good. He always says "Please" and "Thank You." He even loves vegetables and never picks his nose!

One day, Henry wonders what it would be like to be perfect. So, the next day, he doesn't splash Peter with water. This makes everyone wake up late! Henry and Peter are late for class. Back home, Henry doesn't bother Peter. Instead, he reads a book about super-mice.

At dinner, Henry helps set the table. He doesn't kick Peter or slurp his spaghetti. He even eats his vegetables! Peter wants Henry to be horrid again. He tries to make Henry hit him, but Henry stays good. When Mum gives Henry cake and a kiss for being good, Peter gets mad. He throws his plate at Henry but hits Mum instead! Mum sends Peter to his room. When Henry laughs, she sends him to his room too. Henry is surprised that being perfect was actually fun!

Horrid Henry's Dance Class

Henry and Peter have to go to a dance class. Their teacher is Miss Impatience Tutu. She says she's patient, but she really isn't! Henry hates her class.

The class is getting ready for a concert. Everyone is practicing their dances. Miss Tutu makes Henry sit behind a fake bush. She doesn't want him to embarrass everyone. When it's time for the concert, Henry decides to make his part bigger. He causes a big fuss! Miss Tutu has to stop the concert. Henry is happy because he finally gets to go to karate instead!

Horrid Henry & Moody Margaret

Horrid Henry has a big rival: Moody Margaret. Margaret lives next door to Henry. She's in his class. She also has all the cool toys Henry's parents won't let him have. This is the only reason Henry plays with her.

They are playing pirates. They argue about who gets to be Captain Hook. Peter begs not to be the prisoner. Margaret finally lets Henry be Captain Hook. She becomes Mr. Smee. Henry tells them to walk the plank. Margaret decides she doesn't want to play anymore. Henry gets annoyed and tells her to play. But Margaret shrieks really loudly! No one can shriek as loud as her. So, Henry gives her back the hook.

Margaret decides she wants to eat something. Henry doesn't want to share his food. He offers her gross choices. When he mentions "Glop" (a mix of horrible foods), Margaret gets an idea. She suggests they make the yuckiest Glop ever! They put in awful ingredients. Margaret eats a spoonful and pretends it's good. Henry doesn't want to eat it. He takes a tiny spoonful. Just as Margaret is about to do something horrible, Peter steps in. He asks for some food. Henry gives him the Glop!

Horrid Henry's Holiday

Henry hates holidays. He has his own idea of a perfect holiday. But his parents always plan something different. When they say they're going camping in France, Henry gets excited.

However, the campsite isn't what Henry imagined. It's rainy, and the toilets are dirty. Henry gets angry. He tries to knock down tents and play loud music. Dad stops him. Just as they are about to eat baked beans, it starts raining again.

The family sleeps soundly in the tent. But Henry can't sleep because of sharp rocks and mosquitoes. When they wake up, they go for a walk. Henry has to collect firewood. Henry uses the dry, wooden pegs holding up the tents as firewood! He makes a huge fire. Henry dreams he is floating. When he wakes up, he really is floating! The tent has flooded and collapsed. Everyone is soaked. Henry then takes his family to the campsite he wanted. It has modern things. The story ends with the family eating crisps and watching TV.
