Henry is the main character of the series. He is a determined and persistent young boy who feels life is unfair and that everyone is against him. He tries to fight against the rules set by adults. Teachers, relatives, and babysitters often try to avoid him because of his behavior. Even his parents argue about whose turn it is to look after him.

Henry is often selfish, stubborn, and arrogant, rarely learning from his mistakes. He can be very honest, telling his mother's boss what she calls her behind her back, and isn't afraid to tell people he dislikes them. However, he will act nice and work with Margaret or even Peter if it helps him get his own way. Because he's young, Henry can get scared by ghost stories or monsters, and he's afraid of needles. He is very creative and imaginative, often daydreaming about being a terrifying creature. He has "Eureka moments" when he thinks of a "spectacularly wonderful idea." In every story, Henry wants to get or do something (or avoid doing something), and the chaos that follows is a result of this strong desire.

When Henry plans something, it's usually to get what he wants, not just to cause trouble. He takes life seriously and truly believes in what he's doing, making him a complex character. It's also hinted that deep down, Henry doesn't mean to be horrid. He might act that way to get attention and feel good about himself, especially when dealing with his younger brother Peter.

Peter is desperate for praise and attention. He gets his toys out just to tidy them again in one episode. He seems to see other members of "The Best Boys Club" as followers rather than friends, suggesting he acts perfect mainly for praise. Sometimes, he tries to take credit for Henry's good deeds. Peter rarely disobeys adults, but he has acted out in revenge against Henry or to frame him. He seems to enjoy Henry's suffering and punishments, hinting that he might be more complex than he appears. Despite all this, Henry will still help Peter sometimes, like rescuing him from a falling shelf.
