Plot Summary
The story begins with Horrid Henry trying to steal cookies from Moody Margaret's Secret Club using his magnetic yoyo. But before he can eat them, his mum tells him to do his homework. The next morning, Henry finds his homework is a total mess! It got milk spilled on it, stepped on, and squashed into the couch.
Henry decides to leave the messy homework behind. He gets his friend Brainy Brian to write a fake note from his mum, saying his cat ate it. But his teacher, Miss Battle-Axe, quickly realizes the note is fake. Brian spelled "homework" correctly, which Henry usually can't do!
School Trouble and a Talent Show
Henry ends up in detention. His friends join him there to practice for a school talent contest. While they are rehearsing, the headteacher, Miss Oddbod, and two school inspectors walk in.
A man named Vic Van Wrinkle, who runs an expensive private school called Brick House, has been secretly paying the school inspectors. He wants them to make Ashton Primary, Henry's school, look bad. If Ashton Primary closes, he will get lots of new students and make a lot of money. Henry and Moody Margaret's bad behavior makes Miss Oddbod fire Miss Battle-Axe and Miss Lovely. The school inspectors even encourage Henry's pranks!
Saving Ashton Primary
With Ashton Primary about to close, Henry's Great Aunt Greta offers to pay for Henry to go to an all-girls school. She thinks Henry is a girl! His younger brother, Peter, would go to Brick House. Miss Lovely gets a job at Brick House. There, she notices the school inspectors. Peter helps by distracting everyone with many versions of "Frère Jacques". This lets Miss Lovely spy on Van Wrinkle and the inspectors. Van Wrinkle catches her, but she secretly passes notes about his plan to Peter.
Meanwhile, Henry's new schoolmates quickly figure out he's a boy and start chasing him. Margaret, who has also been moved to the same school, helps Henry escape. This scary experience makes them decide to work together to save Ashton Primary. Henry plans to win the talent contest with his band, the Zero Zombies. He hopes this will make them famous enough to keep the school open.
The Game Show and the Big Reveal
After the band wins the contest, Miss Oddbod tells Henry that fame won't save the school. Later, Henry is invited to a game show called 2 Cool 4 School. He plans to use the prize money to bribe the school inspectors. In the final round, he faces Miss Battle-Axe. She challenges him to spell "homework." Henry remembers Miss Battle-Axe's old advice and uses a trick to remember the spelling. For the first time, he spells "homework" correctly with two "o"s!
Meanwhile, Peter and his friends try to rescue Miss Lovely but are caught by Van Wrinkle. Miss Lovely tricks Van Wrinkle into explaining his whole plan. Peter secretly calls the school on Miss Lovely's phone, so Miss Oddbod hears everything. Miss Oddbod calls the police. Van Wrinkle tries to run away, but he trips because Peter tied his shoelaces together! He is then arrested. Henry returns and offers his prize money to Miss Oddbod. She says the school is already saved! Margaret suggests using the money for a huge party, and everyone agrees.
