History of Hospers

Hospers was founded in 1872. This happened when the St. Paul and Sioux City Railroad expanded its tracks to this area. The city was named after Henry Hospers. He was a banker and developer in Iowa. Henry Hospers helped many Dutch immigrants and settlers from other parts of the country move to Sioux County.

Hospers is home to Hospers Elementary School. This school teaches students from kindergarten to fifth grade. The current building opened in the late 1950s. There are about 240 students enrolled here.

Soon, Hospers Elementary will close. Students will then attend elementary school in Orange City. Middle school students from Hospers go to MOC-Floyd Valley Middle School in Alton. High school students attend MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City.

A private school, Spalding Catholic High School, used to have a center in Hospers. This center closed in 2013. Another elementary school, Hospers Christian, closed in 2003. That building is now a furniture store.

  • Charles B. Hoeven (1895–1980) – He was a U.S. Representative from Iowa for 22 years. This means he was a politician who helped make laws for the country.
  • Dennis Marion Schnurr – He is an Archbishop in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Before that, he was a Bishop in Minnesota.
