Plane Crash Survival Story

On November 8, 1972, a medical evacuation plane crashed near Hottah Lake. The pilot, Marten Hartwell, survived the crash but broke both of his legs.

Sadly, the nurse, Judy Hill, and a pregnant Inuk woman named Neemee Nulliayok did not survive. Another passenger, David Pisurayak Kootook, also survived the crash but passed away 20 days later. Kootook played a big role in helping Hartwell survive during those difficult days.

Hottah Lake's Legacy on Mars

Hottah Lake has a cool connection to space! When the Mars Curiosity rover was exploring Mars, it found clear signs of an ancient streambed. These signs were piles of smooth, cemented rocks called conglomerates.

Because of this discovery, the scientists managing the project decided to name one of these rock sites "Hottah." The other site was named "Link." This was a way to honor Hottah Lake back on Earth.
