The Roots of the Al Said Family
The Al Said family comes from a group called the Al Azd. Their family history goes back to an ancestor named al-'Atik. This group settled in a place called Dibba. Because of this, they were sometimes known as the "Azd of Daba."
From Yemen to Oman
Like many other Qahtani people, the Azd originally came from a country called Yemen. They moved north after a big dam, the Marib Dam, was destroyed. This happened a very long time ago, around the 3rd or 4th century CE. At that time, the Persian rulers were not very strong in the area.
Becoming Powerful Leaders
The Azd family became powerful by building special relationships with the Persian rulers. The Persians even called the Azdites "the kings of the Arabs." This can be seen in old writings from the 6th century CE. The leader of the Azd group was given a special title. It was buland, which meant "eminence" or "stature" in the old Persian language. Later, this word became al-julandā in Arabic. This title was used for the early rulers of Oman.
The Arrival of Islam
When the religion of Islam arrived, the Persian rulers in Oman had problems with the Azdi kings who had become Muslim. The Arabs gained strength when Muslim forces from Medina, sent by the prophet Muhammad, joined them. In battles that followed, the Persian strongholds were taken over. Their forces were pushed out by the year 630 CE.
With the rise of Islam, the Azd became important leaders in the Muslim conquests that followed. Later, they played a big role in the Umayyad Caliphate. This was thanks to a famous general named Al Muhallab ibn Abi Suffrah. He is an ancestor of the Al Busaid tribe, which is part of the Al Said family. Many early histories of Arabs begin by talking about the Azd.
