The Howell's fawn lily (scientific name: Erythronium howellii) is a beautiful flowering plant. It is a type of bulb, which means it grows from an underground storage part, similar to an onion. This plant belongs to the lily family.

This special lily is endemic to a specific area. This means it only grows naturally in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. Scientists have recently reclassified it. Now, it is sometimes known as Erythronium citrinum var. citrinum. This means it is considered a variety of the citrus fawn lily.

Where Howell's Fawn Lily Grows

Howell's fawn lily is found in two main mountain areas. These are the Klamath Mountains and the northern Outer California Coast Ranges.

Specific Locations

You can find small groups of these lilies in certain counties. In northern California, they grow in Siskiyou, Trinity, and Del Norte Counties. In Oregon, they are found in Curry, Josephine, and Jackson Counties.

Why This Lily is Vulnerable

This plant is considered "vulnerable." This means it could be at risk of disappearing if its habitat is not protected. Most of the populations are in Oregon, with fewer in California. There are less than 38 known places where this lily grows in Oregon. The groups of plants are not very large. Many of them were found during surveys done before trees were harvested for timber. This shows how important it is to protect their natural homes.
