History of Hoyt
Hoyt was started in 1886. It got its name from George Henry Hoyt. He was a lawyer who worked to end slavery, also known as an abolitionist. He even worked for John Brown, a famous person who fought against slavery.
A railroad called the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad used to run through Hoyt. This was in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Back then, Hoyt was a big place for shipping cattle and hay. It was located between St. Joseph, Missouri and Herington, Kansas. The railroad, often called the Rock Island Line, stopped running in 1980. Today, you can hardly see any signs of the old railroad tracks.
