History of Hrabove
The village of Hrabove was first settled in the late 1400s. It was built on the left bank of the Mius river. Later, in 1787, the village was moved to its current location.
Early Buildings
A stone church, called the Holy Trinity Church, was built in 1803. Its main shape is still there today. However, it was largely rebuilt in 1903 to make it stronger and bigger.
Changes in Control
After the Russian Empire ended, Hrabove became part of the Ukrainian People's Republic. In February 1918, a group led by Nestor Makhno took control. He was an anarchist revolutionary. After a war between Ukraine and the Soviet Union, Hrabove joined the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
World War II Period
During World War II, Nazi Germany took over the area. This happened after a big military operation called Barbarossa. Hrabove returned to Soviet control in August 1943. This was after the Donbas strategic offensive.
Recent Conflicts
In 2014, a conflict started in the Donbas region. Hrabove then came under the control of the Donetsk People's Republic. This group was supported by Russia. In 2022, Russia began an invasion of Ukraine. Russia then said it had taken over Donetsk and other regions. However, under Ukrainian law, Hrabove is still part of the "temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine".
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17
Hrabove became known around the world on July 17, 2014. On that day, a Boeing 777 airplane crashed there. This plane was Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. It was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. All 298 people on board died in the crash.
The village was in an area where fighting was happening. This was part of the war in Donbas. Since 2014, the area has been controlled by the Donetsk People's Republic.
