Oblasts of Ukraine facts for kids
The Oblasts of Ukraine are like the main regions or provinces that make up the country of Ukraine. Think of them as big areas, similar to states in the USA or large counties in other countries. Ukraine has 24 of these oblasts. Each oblast has its own capital city, which is usually the largest city in that region.
What is an Oblast?
An oblast is the highest level of administrative division in Ukraine. This means it's how the country is divided up for government and management purposes. Each oblast has its own local government that helps manage things like schools, hospitals, and roads in that region.
How Oblasts are Organized
Each oblast is further divided into smaller areas called raions. You can think of raions as smaller districts within an oblast. Besides raions, some cities are known as "cities of regional importance." This means they are big and important enough to be managed directly by the oblast government, rather than being part of a raion.
