Hu Guangyong (1823–1885) was a very successful businessman in China. He was also known as Hu Xueyan. He lived during the Qing dynasty, a long time ago. Hu Xueyan worked in many different areas. These included banking, real estate, and shipping. He also dealt with Chinese medicine. He traded in salt, tea, clothes, and food. He even traded in weapons.
Hu Xueyan was special because he was a merchant. In the Qing dynasty, merchants were not usually given high ranks. But Hu Xueyan was given a special red-topped hat. This showed he was a high-ranking officer. He was also one of the few people allowed to ride a horse inside the Forbidden City. This was a huge honor from Empress Dowager Cixi.

The Early Life of Hu Xueyan
Hu Xueyan was born in 1823 in Jixi County, China. When he was 14, in 1837, he moved to Hangzhou. There, he started working as an apprentice at a private bank. This bank later became the start of his own successful business, the Fukang Bank.
When he was 26, Hu Xueyan became friends with Wang Youling. Wang was a powerful person who dealt with salt. Hu helped Wang by lending him 500 taels of silver. This money helped Wang get a government job. This friendship was very important for Hu. It helped him become rich and powerful later on.
Hu Xueyan's Rise to Success
Twelve years later, in 1860, Wang Youling became the governor of Zhejiang province. Wang remembered Hu's help. He worked hard to help Hu start more private banks. The next year, a big war called the Taiping Rebellion reached Hangzhou. Hu used his power to bring food and weapons into the city. But Hangzhou still fell to the rebels.
When he was 39, Hu found a new friend in General Tso. General Tso was a very important military leader. Hu gained Tso's trust by paying for his army's food and salaries. After that, Hu became the main financier for all of General Tso's military plans.
In 1866, Hu helped fund the Foochow Arsenal. This was China's first modern shipyard and naval school. Later, General Tso moved to a new position. Hu then took over running the naval school for him.
Supporting Military Campaigns
Hu Xueyan played a big part in General Tso's military efforts. Tso's troops needed to move across long distances. They fought against rebels in Xinjiang and later against the Russians. This was known as the Ili Crisis. Hu was in charge of getting supplies for the army. He managed to raise a huge amount of money, about 15,950,000 taels of silver. He borrowed this money from HSBC bank. This was HSBC's first big loan in China.
Because of Hu's help, General Tso won his battles. The Qing government was very happy. They gave Hu the special red-topped hat for his great efforts.
Business and Charity Work
As he became more successful, Hu Xueyan started many other businesses. He owned banks and pawnshops. After the government recognized his achievements, he also started helping people. He did a lot of charity work.
His most famous contribution is the medicinal hall Hu Qing Yu Tang. This place still exists today. It was known for making very high-quality medicine. They also treated customers fairly and offered cheap healthcare. It is said that Hu himself once exchanged a peasant's medicine. This was after the peasant complained about it. His strong ethics made him very famous.
Later Life and Legacy
Later in his life, Hu Xueyan tried to control the silk trade. But this led to a boycott by the French. In 1883, he was forced to sell his silk. This caused him to have money problems. People started taking their money out of his banks. In 1884, he had to declare bankruptcy. He lost everything. Within a year, in 1885, Hu Xueyan died at age 62. He passed away from sadness.
Today, Hu Xueyan's former home is a popular place to visit in Hangzhou. It was opened to the public in 2001 after being fixed up.
