Preparing huaraches

A Huarache (say "wah-RAH-cheh") is a yummy Mexican dish. It's made from a special corn dough called masa. Inside the dough, there are usually smashed pinto beans. The dough is shaped like a long oval, then fried.

After frying, people add all sorts of tasty toppings. These can include green or red salsa, onions, potatoes, and cilantro. You can also add meat like ground beef. Finally, it's topped with queso fresco, which is a fresh, crumbly cheese. Sometimes, huaraches are served with fried cactus leaves, called Nopales.

This dish is very popular in Mexico City, where it first came from. You can also find huaraches in cities in the United States that have many Mexican-American people. These cities include Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.

The name "Huarache" comes from its shape. It looks a lot like traditional Mexican sandals that have the same name. The word "Huarache" comes from the Purépecha people. Huaraches are similar to other Mexican dishes like sopes and tlacoyos, but they have their own unique oval shape.

Where Did Huaraches Come From?

Huaraches were first made in Mexico City around the early 1930s. A woman named Mrs. Carmen Gomez Medina created them. She had a food stall near a water channel called La Viga. At her stall, she used to make a dish called tlacoyos.

Later, the water channel was covered up to make a road. Mrs. Gomez moved her stall to a new spot. After 1957, she moved again to a small place near the Mercado de Jamaica market. Because her new dish was shaped differently from other foods, people started calling it "huarache."
