Hubert Hahne's Racing Journey
Hubert Hahne was a skilled driver who competed in different types of car races. He was especially good at touring car racing, where cars that look like regular street cars are modified for speed.
Success in Touring Cars
In 1966, Hubert Hahne drove a BMW New Class 2000TI. He achieved something amazing at the famous Nürburgring race track in Germany. This track is very long and challenging. On August 6, 1966, Hubert Hahne became the first person to complete a lap of the Nürburgring in a touring car in under 10 minutes! His time was 9 minutes and 58.5 seconds. This was a big deal in the racing world.
Racing in Formula One
Hubert Hahne also competed in Formula One races, which is the highest level of single-seater car racing. He took part in five Formula One World Championship races.
Formula Two Races in Formula One Events
Sometimes, on the very long Nürburgring track, Formula Two cars would race alongside the Formula One cars. Formula Two cars are a step below Formula One in terms of power and speed. Drivers in these F2 cars couldn't score points for the main Formula One World Championship. Hubert Hahne raced in the Formula Two sections of the 1966 German Grand Prix and the 1969 German Grand Prix. However, he withdrew from the 1969 race before it started because of a serious accident involving his teammate, Gerhard Mitter.
His True Formula One Debut
Hubert Hahne made his official Formula One debut at the 1967 German Grand Prix. He drove a special Lola car that had a powerful 2-liter BMW engine. This allowed him to compete in the Formula One category. Unfortunately, he had to stop racing on lap 7 due to a problem with his car's suspension. The next year, in 1968, he finished 10th in the same type of car at the German Grand Prix.
Final Formula One Attempt
In 1970, Hubert Hahne tried to race a March 701 car at the 1970 German Grand Prix, which was held at the Hockenheimring that year. However, he wasn't able to qualify for the race. After this, Hubert Hahne decided to retire from racing.
