Hugh Anthony Quarshie (born 22 December 1954) is a British actor who was born in Ghana. He is famous for playing Ric Griffin in the TV show Holby City for many years (2001–2020). He also played Captain Panaka in the Star Wars movie Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999).
Hugh Quarshie has also performed in many plays with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has been a part of this famous theatre group since 1981. His other movies include Highlander, Nightbreed, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He has won several awards for his acting.

Early Life and Education
Hugh Quarshie was born in Accra, Ghana, on December 22, 1954. His family has a mix of Ghanaian, English, and Dutch backgrounds. His mother came from a family of chiefs in Ghana.
When he was three years old, Hugh moved with his family to the United Kingdom. He went to Bryanston School and Dean Close School. While at Dean Close School, he acted in a play called Othello. Later, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford University.
Acting Career Highlights
Before becoming an actor, Hugh Quarshie thought about being a journalist. He is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), which is a very well-known theatre group. He has been in many plays and TV shows.
He is widely known for his roles as Sunda Kastagir in Highlander and Captain Panaka in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. He also played Ric Griffin in the popular TV series Holby City. In 1999, he attended a big Star Wars fan event called "Star Wars Celebration." He also played Lieutenant Obutu in the movie Wing Commander.
In 2007, he appeared in two episodes of Doctor Who as a character named Solomon. He also played Father Gus in the movie The Church (1989). Hugh Quarshie has also narrated many TV documentaries, like Mega Falls of Iguacu and The Great Rift: Africa's Wild Heart.
Personal Life and Family History
In 2010, Hugh Quarshie was on a TV show called Who Do You Think You Are?. On the show, he learned more about his family history in Ghana and the Netherlands. He found out that one of his ancestors was a Dutch official in Ghana. This also showed he was a distant relative of Dutch actor Antonie Kamerling.
Political Views
Hugh Quarshie supports the Women's Equality Party. This political party works to achieve equality for women.
