The Hundred of Cultana is a special area of land in South Australia. Think of a 'hundred' as an old way of dividing up land, like a historical district. It's found on the upper Eyre Peninsula, just north of a town called Whyalla.
It is one of seven such areas in the County of York. The Hundred of Cultana was officially created in 1940 by the Governor at the time, Malcolm Barclay-Harvey. It was named after Cultana Hill, using a word from the local Indigenous language.
Places in the Hundred of Cultana
Many towns and areas that are part of the Whyalla Council are located inside the Hundred of Cultana. These include:
- Whyalla Barson (mostly)
- Cultana (southern part)
- False Bay
- Port Bonython
- Point Lowly
- Point Lowly North
- Fitzgerald Bay
- Backy Point
There is also a historic area called Cultana. It is found where the Lincoln Highway meets Point Lowly Road. This historic spot is in the western part of the hundred. However, it is outside the modern-day area officially known as Cultana.
