Hunter got its first post office in 1895. The city was named after Al Hunter, who was one of the first people to settle there. Hunter officially became a city in 1915.

Education in Hunter

The public schools in Hunter are part of the Sylvan–Lucas USD 299 school district.

Hunter High School started in 1917. Later, the schools from Hunter, Sylvan Grove, and Vesper joined together in 1966. This new group was called Sylvan Unified schools.

In 2010, Sylvan Unified schools joined with Lucas-Luray schools. They formed the current Sylvan-Lucas Unified school district. The mascot for Sylvan Unified and Sylvan-Lucas Unified schools is the Mustangs. Hunter High School's mascot used to be the Hunter Huntsmen.
