The Oblique Moth (Hydraecia obliqua) is a type of moth from the Noctuidae family. A scientist named Leon F. Harvey first described it in 1876. This moth lives in western North America.

About the Oblique Moth

This moth is found in many places across western North America. You can see it as far east as the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. It also lives along the crest of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington.

Where Does the Oblique Moth Live?

The Oblique Moth lives along the coast from south-western British Columbia all the way south. There is also a separate group of these moths living further north in Terrace, British Columbia.

Their favorite places to live include areas along creeks and rivers in coastal rainforests. They also like open oak woodlands, mixed forests with different kinds of trees, and grassy valleys.

What Does the Oblique Moth Look Like?

The front wings of the Oblique Moth are usually between 16 and 24 millimeters long. These wings are a warm orange-brown color. However, their exact shade can change quite a bit.

Moths from the California Coast might have darker brown wings. Those from the Pacific Northwest are often a lighter orange-brown. Moths found in the Sierra Nevada mountains can be a pale yellow-brown. The back wings are light with a yellow tint. They often have dark veins and a bit of gray color near the edge.

What Do Young Moths Eat?

The young moths, called larvae, likely dig into the stems and roots of soft plants. Scientists have seen these larvae eating plants from the Lupinus family.
