The name "Hypoluxo" has an interesting and debated history. Some people think it comes from Greek and Latin words meaning "under light."
Native American Roots of Hypoluxo
Another idea is that the name comes from the Seminole people. A man named Charlie W. Pierce, whose family settled nearby in 1873, said a Seminole woman told his mother the Seminole name for Lake Worth was Hypoluxo. He thought it meant "island" or "water all around, no get out." The town's history mentions this name as "Opoloccha."
Different Theories on the Name
Another expert, J. Clarence Simpson, suggests the name comes from the Creek-Seminole words Hapo (meaning "mound") and Plotski (meaning "round"). This would make "Hypoluxo" mean "round mound." The name "Hypoluxo" was even seen on a map from the War Department in 1841.
