Kim Tae-pyung (Hangul: 김태평; born September 25, 1982), known by his stage name Hyun Bin (Hangul: 현빈), is a famous South Korean actor. He has been nominated for many awards, including five at the Baeksang Arts Awards. He even won the top prize for Television at the 47th Baeksang Arts Awards.
Hyun Bin was named Gallup Korea's Television Actor of the Year in 2011. His successful TV shows and movies have made him a big star in the Hallyu movement, which means Korean culture is popular around the world.
He first became widely known for his role in the romantic comedy My Lovely Sam Soon (2005). After that, he starred in many popular TV shows. These include romantic fantasy dramas like Secret Garden (2010–2011) and Memories of the Alhambra (2018–2019). He also starred in the romantic drama Crash Landing on You (2019–2020).
Hyun Bin also appeared in successful movies. These include the historical action film The Fatal Encounter (2014) and the action thriller Confidential Assignment (2017). He also starred in its sequel in 2022 and the crime thriller The Swindlers (2017).

Hyun Bin's Acting Journey
Starting His Acting Career (2003–2007)
Hyun Bin's first movie, Shower, was planned for 2002 but was not released. He officially started acting in 2003 in the TV series Bodyguard. He then appeared in the sitcom Nonstop 4 and the drama Ireland. His first movie to be released was the youth sports film Spin Kick in the same year.
He became a huge star with the 2005 romantic comedy My Lovely Sam Soon. This show was incredibly popular, with over 37% of viewers tuning in. The final episode reached 50.5% viewership, making it one of the highest-rated Korean dramas ever. This success made Hyun Bin a top actor in South Korea and a Hallyu star across Asia.
Hyun Bin then starred in his first main movie role in A Millionaire's First Love. His next TV show was The Snow Queen. Even though it didn't get high ratings, it earned him his first nomination for Best Actor at the 43rd Baeksang Arts Awards.
New Challenges and Secret Garden (2008–2011)
To show his acting range, Hyun Bin chose different kinds of projects. In 2008, he acted in the film I Am Happy, playing a character with mental illness. He also returned to TV in Worlds Within, which was praised for its writing. In 2009, he received good reviews for playing a complex character in the crime drama Friend, Our Legend.
In 2010, Hyun Bin starred in Secret Garden, a romantic fantasy drama. This show was a massive hit, reaching 35% viewership. It became very popular in Korea and internationally for its style, famous lines, and music. His role as Kim Joo-won created a "Hyun Bin Syndrome," meaning he was everywhere. He won awards at the 2010 SBS Drama Awards and the 47th Baeksang Arts Awards for his amazing performance. He also sang "That Man" for the show's soundtrack, which topped music charts.
In 2011, Hyun Bin appeared in two movies: Come Rain, Come Shine and Late Autumn. Late Autumn, filmed in Seattle, was an English-language remake of an old Korean movie. It became the highest-grossing Korean film released in China at the time, earning over $9.5 million. Hyun Bin received good reviews for his acting in this film. Both movies were shown at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, which Hyun Bin called his "most happiest achievement."
Military Service (2011–2012)
On March 7, 2011, Hyun Bin began his 21-month mandatory military service in the Marine Corps. He chose the Marine Corps, known as the toughest branch, because he admired them. His decision to join the Marines at the peak of his career gained a lot of attention. He was even named a top marksman during his training.
After training, Hyun Bin was assigned to active duty on Baengnyeongdo island, near the border between North and South Korea. He was discharged on December 6, 2012. He received awards for being an excellent soldier.
Return to Entertainment (2013–2016)
After his military service, Hyun Bin spent most of 2013 filming commercials and meeting fans across Asia. For his acting comeback, he chose The Fatal Encounter, a historical film where he played King Jeongjo. The movie was released in April 2014 and attracted over three million viewers.
In 2015, Hyun Bin returned to Korean dramas after four years in the romantic comedy Hyde Jekyll, Me. In this drama, he played a man with split personality disorder. In January 2016, he started his own agency, VAST Entertainment.
Continued Success (2017–Present)
Hyun Bin returned to the big screen with the action-thriller Confidential Assignment (2017). He played a North Korean detective. The movie was a hit, and critics praised his action and comedy skills. He then starred in the crime action film The Swindlers.
In 2018, Hyun Bin played his first villain role in the crime thriller The Negotiation with Son Ye-jin. He also starred in the zombie movie Rampant. In the same year, he returned to TV with the fantasy drama Memories of the Alhambra. This series became one of the highest-rated Korean dramas on cable TV.
In 2019, Hyun Bin played a North Korean army captain in the romance drama Crash Landing on You, reuniting with Son Ye-jin. This drama was a huge success and is the fifth highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history. Hyun Bin won the Grand Prize at the APAN Star Awards for his role. In 2023, he starred as an NIS agent in the action thriller film The Point Men.
Giving Back: Philanthropy
Hyun Bin has shown a strong commitment to helping others. In October 2013, he received an award for saving a large amount of money over 17 years. In February 2016, he supported a campaign against animal cruelty.
In March 2020, Hyun Bin secretly donated 200 million won (about US$160,000) to help fight the COVID-19 outbreak. He is also a member of the "Honor Society," a group of people who make large private donations. He has supported organizations like Save the Children and the Community Chest of Korea.
On March 8, 2022, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin together donated 200 million won to help people affected by a large wildfire in Korea.
Hyun Bin's Personal Life
Hyun Bin was born and grew up in Seoul. He has an older brother. He studied Theater Studies at Chung-Ang University and later earned a Master's degree from the same university.
Relationship and Marriage
On January 1, 2021, Hyun Bin's agency confirmed that he was in a relationship with actress Son Ye-jin. They had worked together in The Negotiation and Crash Landing on You and started dating in 2020.
On February 10, 2022, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin announced their engagement. They got married in a private ceremony on March 31, 2022. On June 27, 2022, Son Ye-jin announced she was expecting their first child. Their son was born on November 27, 2022.
