Hyun Bin, whose real name is Kim Tae-pyung, is a famous actor from South Korea. He was born on September 25, 1982. Many people first noticed him in the fun romantic TV show My Lovely Sam Soon in 2005.
Since then, he has starred in many popular TV shows. These include the romantic fantasy drama Secret Garden (2010–2011) and the fantasy drama Memories of the Alhambra (2018–2019). He also starred in the romantic drama Crash Landing on You (2019–2020).
Hyun Bin also became very popular by acting in successful movies. Some of these are the action film Confidential Assignment (2017) and its sequel in 2022. He also starred in the crime thriller The Swindlers (2017). In 2011, he was even named 'Television Actor of the Year' by Gallup Korea. Because his shows and movies are so popular around the world, he is known as a big 'Hallyu' star. Hallyu means the 'Korean Wave' of pop culture.
Critics also loved his acting in the movie Late Autumn (2010). This movie was shown at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. Throughout his career, he has won many awards for his acting. One of his biggest wins was the Grand Prize for Television at the 47th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Hyun Bin's Acting Journey
How Hyun Bin Started Acting (2003–2007)
Hyun Bin's first movie, Shower, was planned for 2002. But it was never released because there wasn't enough money to finish it. He officially started acting in 2003 in the TV show Bodyguard.
Later, he appeared in the sitcom Nonstop 4 and the drama Ireland. His first movie that was released was the youth sports film Spin Kick in the same year.
Hyun Bin became a huge star with the 2005 romantic comedy My Lovely Sam Soon. He won a top award for his role in this show. My Lovely Sam Soon was incredibly popular, with over 37% of viewers watching it. The final episode was watched by 50.5% of viewers, making it one of the most-watched Korean dramas ever. This show made Hyun Bin a top star in South Korea and across Asia.
He then starred in his first main movie role in A Millionaire's First Love. This movie was very popular with young audiences. His next TV show was The Snow Queen. Even though this show wasn't as popular, it earned him his first nomination for Best Actor.
New Acting Challenges and Secret Garden (2008–2011)
Hyun Bin started choosing different kinds of roles to show his acting skills. In 2008, he acted in the movie I Am Happy. He played a man with a mental illness in this film. The movie was shown at a film festival but was released in theaters later in 2009.
He then returned to TV in Worlds Within. This show was liked for its good writing, and Hyun Bin was praised for his acting. In 2009, he played a tough character in the gangster story Friend, Our Legend. To get ready for this role, he watched the original movie many times.
In 2010, Hyun Bin starred in Secret Garden. This was a romantic fantasy drama that became very popular. It had high viewer ratings and was loved both in Korea and around the world. His character, Kim Joo-won, became so famous that people called it the "Hyun Bin Syndrome." His face and name were everywhere! He won many awards for his amazing performance in this show. He also sang a song for the show's soundtrack called "That Man," which became number one on music charts.
In 2011, Hyun Bin appeared in two movies released close together. One was Come Rain, Come Shine, a quiet movie about a breakup. The other was Late Autumn, filmed in Seattle. In Late Autumn, he played a man who falls in love with a woman on leave from prison. This movie became the highest-earning Korean film in China at that time. Critics praised his acting in it. Military Service (2011–2012)
On March 7, 2011, Hyun Bin began his 21 months of mandatory military service. He chose to join the Marine Corps, which is known as the toughest branch of the Korean military. He wanted to be a combat soldier.
His decision to join the Marines at the peak of his career created a lot of interest. He was even named a top marksman during his training. This means he was very good at shooting. The Marines originally wanted him to do public relations work. But because of public opinion and his wish to serve on the front line, he was sent to Baengnyeong Island. This island is close to the border between North and South Korea.
After six months in the service, Hyun Bin took part in a marathon. He ran 6.25 km with other Marines. This event remembered a historical moment when the Marines won back Seoul during the Korean War.
He finished his service on December 6, 2012. He received awards for being an excellent soldier. After his military service, he and actress Shin Min-ah started their own management company called O& Entertainment.
Returning to Acting (2013–2016)
In 2013, Hyun Bin spent most of his time filming commercials. He also met fans across Asia. For his first acting role after the military, he chose The Fatal Encounter. This was his first period film, where he played King Jeongjo. The movie was released in April 2014 and was seen by over three million people. However, some critics felt his acting in this film was not as strong.
In 2015, Hyun Bin returned to Korean TV dramas with the romantic comedy Hyde Jekyll, Me. In this show, he played a man with split personality disorder. His two different personalities both fell in love with the same woman. In January 2016, he started his own company called VAST Entertainment.
Career Success Continues (2017–Present)
Hyun Bin returned to the big screen with the action-thriller film Confidential Assignment (2017). He played a North Korean detective in this successful movie. Critics praised his action scenes and funny acting. He then starred in another crime action film, The Swindlers. In this movie, he played a character trying to catch a con man.
In 2018, Hyun Bin played his first villain role in the crime thriller The Negotiation, alongside Son Ye-jin. He also starred in the zombie movie Rampant. In the same year, he returned to TV with the fantasy drama Memories of the Alhambra. This show became one of the highest-rated Korean dramas on cable TV. Hyun Bin was praised for his unique portrayal of his character.
In 2019, Hyun Bin played a North Korean army captain in the romance drama Crash Landing on You. He reunited with his The Negotiation co-star Son Ye-jin in this show. The drama was a huge success and is the fifth highest-rated Korean drama in cable TV history. Hyun Bin was praised for his wide range of emotions and acting skills. For his role as Captain Ri Jeong Hyuk, he won the Grand Prize at the APAN Star Awards. In the 2023 action thriller film The Point Men, Hyun Bin played an agent from the National Intelligence Service.
Giving Back
Hyun Bin has also been involved in charity work. In October 2013, he received an award for saving a large amount of money over 17 years. In February 2016, he helped raise awareness about animal cruelty. His agency shared pictures of him with a retired search and rescue dog.
In March 2020, Hyun Bin secretly donated 200 million won (about US$160,000) to help fight the COVID-19 outbreak in South Korea. He is also a member of the "Honor Society," a group of people who make big private donations. He has supported many projects by groups like Save the Children and the Community Chest of Korea.
On March 8, 2022, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin donated 200 million won together. This donation helped people affected by a large wildfire in Korea.
Personal Life
Hyun Bin was born and grew up in Seoul. He has one older brother. He studied Theater Studies at Chung-Ang University. In 2009, he also earned a Master's degree from the same university.
Relationship and Marriage
On January 1, 2021, Hyun Bin's agency confirmed that he was dating actress Son Ye-jin. They had worked together in the movies The Negotiation and Crash Landing on You. Their relationship started in 2020 after Crash Landing on You finished filming.
On February 10, 2022, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin announced they were getting married. They posted letters about it on their social media. They had a private wedding ceremony on March 31, 2022. Their families and close friends attended. On June 27, 2022, Son Ye-jin announced she was pregnant. They welcomed their son on November 27, 2022.
