IC 2118 is a beautiful reflection nebula. A reflection nebula is a cloud of gas and dust that reflects light from nearby stars. It doesn't produce its own light, but rather shines by reflecting the light of other stars.

What Does IC 2118 Look Like?

This nebula is famously known as the Witch Head Nebula. It gets its name because its shape looks like the profile of a witch's head. The "witch's chin" points towards the bright star Rigel in the constellation Orion.

Where is the Witch Head Nebula?

IC 2118 is located in the constellation Eridanus. It is about 900 light-years away from Earth. The light it reflects comes mainly from Rigel, which is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. The dust particles in the nebula scatter the blue light from Rigel more efficiently than red light. This is why the nebula appears to have a blue color.
