History
How the School Started
The IES Lope de Vega was created a long time ago. It officially started on August 26, 1933. This was during a time in Spain called the Spanish Second Republic. At first, the school was not in its current building.
The School During the Civil War
Spain went through a difficult period called the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). During this war, many schools in Madrid closed. However, IES Lope de Vega was one of only three high schools that stayed open.
Even though Madrid was controlled by one side of the war, some teachers at the school supported the other side. This made the school a special place that kept its own views during the conflict. After the war ended, many schools that started during the Second Republic were closed. But IES Lope de Vega was allowed to stay open.
Moving to Its Current Home
The school moved around a few times in its early years. It was first located in a large building on Calle de Manuel Silvela. For a short time, it moved to Calle de Fortuny. Then, during the Civil War, it went back to Manuel Silvela.
Finally, in the early 1940s, the school moved to its permanent home. This is the building you see today on Calle de San Bernardo. Before the high school moved in, this building was used as a teacher training school and a museum about education. Because of its history and importance, the building on San Bernardo was declared a special cultural landmark on March 26, 1999. This means it's protected and valued for its historical significance.
