Ian Jones-Quartey, born on June 18, 1984, is a talented American artist who works in animation. He is a storyboard artist, writer, director, producer, and even a voice actor! He is best known for creating the fun animated series OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes. This show was based on his earlier Cartoon Network pilot called Lakewood Plaza Turbo. It aired from 2017 to 2019. Ian Jones-Quartey also created a webcomic called RPG World. He worked on other popular shows like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Bravest Warriors.

Early Life and Education
Ian Jones-Quartey was born in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, on June 18, 1984. He grew up in Columbia, Maryland. Around 1993, his family moved to Oakland Mills, Columbia, Maryland. His father was an engineer who worked with medicines. His mother was a librarian for a chemical company. Ian went to Long Reach High School in Columbia. Later, he studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Animation Career Highlights
Ian Jones-Quartey started his career by creating a webcomic called RPG World. This comic won awards in 2001 and 2002. In 2007, he teamed up with Jim Gisriel to make a web animation series called nockFORCE. Ian also rapped in this series under the name "effnocka".
His first job in television animation was on The Venture Bros.. He then became a storyboard supervisor for Adventure Time. He also worked as a storyboard artist for Secret Mountain Fort Awesome. Ian is the voice of Wallow in the show Bravest Warriors. He was also a supervising director and helped develop the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe.
Creating OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes
In 2013, Ian Jones-Quartey's short film Lakewood Plaza Turbo was shown on Cartoon Network. This was a television pilot for a possible new series. He had first suggested the idea two years earlier while working on Adventure Time. The short film was later turned into a mobile game called OK K.O.! Lakewood Plaza Turbo. This game was released in February 2016. The full series, OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, started airing on Cartoon Network in August 2017.
Other Projects and Appearances
In 2018, Ian was featured in a podcast called Drawn: The Story of Animation. This podcast gave listeners a look behind the scenes of animation. It included interviews with voice actors, historians, and show creators.
In June 2019, he was a speaker at the Annecy Animation Festival. He joined Rebecca Sugar to talk about "The Making of Steven Universe". In July 2019, he also spoke at the RTX Animation Festival.
On September 2, 2019, Steven Universe: The Movie was released. Ian Jones-Quartey was one of the main producers for this movie. Rebecca Sugar was also a main producer.
Between 2020 and 2021, Ian worked with Rebecca Sugar on some important PSAs. These short videos were about anti-racism. They featured characters from Steven Universe and were shared on the Cartoon Network YouTube channel.
Personal Life and Inspirations
Ian Jones-Quartey's grandmother was Theodosia Okoh. She was the person who designed the flag of Ghana. Ian based the Steven Universe character Nanefua Pizza on his grandmother. By 2017, he was living in Los Angeles.
He married Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe, on December 4, 2019. They had been together for twelve years before getting married.
Ian says that the Japanese series Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump by Akira Toriyama inspired his vehicle designs. He mentioned that many people working on Steven Universe were big fans of Toriyama's work.
