The city officially became a town on May 31, 1878. It was named after Ida County, which got its name from Mount Ida in Greece.
Inside the Ida Grove post office, there is a special painting. It's an oil mural called Preparation for the First County Fair in Ida Grove–1872. This painting was created in 1940 by an artist named Andrene Kauffman. It was part of a program by the U.S. government to create art during that time.
