The Story of Idaho Candy Company
The Idaho Candy Company started a long time ago, in 1901. A man named Thomas Ovard "T.O." Smith began making chocolates in his garage. He would then sell them by going from house to house. This is how he started his business!
In 1909, T.O. Smith opened a factory in Boise. This factory is still used today to make candy. Later, in 1984, John Wagers bought the company. His son, Dave Wagers, has been in charge since 1991. In 2007, a local newspaper called Boise Weekly even named them the "Best Candy Company."
Popular Candy Bars and Treats
Over the years, the Idaho Candy Company has made more than 50 different kinds of candy bars. Today, they focus on a few special ones.
- The Idaho Spud bar was first made in 1918. It has a cocoa-flavored marshmallow inside. This is covered with dark chocolate and sprinkled with coconut flakes. It is shaped like a potato!
- The Old Faithful bar came out in 1925. It has a vanilla-flavored marshmallow center. On top of the marshmallow are whole peanuts, all covered in milk chocolate.
- The Cherry Cocktail was created in 1926. This bar has a creamy maraschino cherry center. It is covered in crushed peanuts and milk chocolate.
The company also makes three kinds of Owyhee Butter Toffee. Plus, they have about 20 different types of bulk candy. You can buy all their candies directly from the Idaho Candy Company website.
The candies often have "Owyhee" on their labels. This name comes from the Owyhee River and Owyhee County, Idaho. These places are close to where the candy is made.
