The Sweet History of Idaho Candy
The Idaho Candy Company started way back in 1901. A man named Thomas Ovard "T.O." Smith began making chocolates in his garage. He would sell them right to people's doors! In 1909, he opened a factory in Boise. Guess what? That same factory is still making candy today!
Later, in 1984, John Wagers bought the company. His son, Dave Wagers, has been in charge since 1991. In 2007, the company was even named "Best Candy Company" by a local newspaper called Boise Weekly.
Delicious Candy Products
Over the years, the Idaho Candy Company has made more than 50 different kinds of candy bars. By 2013, they focused on four main favorites.
The Famous Idaho Spud
The Idaho Spud bar first came out in 1918. It has a cocoa-flavored marshmallow inside. This is covered with dark chocolate and sprinkled with coconut flakes. It's shaped like a potato, which is why it's called a "Spud"!
Other Yummy Bars
- The Old Faithful bar (made since 1925) has a vanilla-flavored marshmallow center. It's topped with whole peanuts and covered in milk chocolate.
- The Cherry Cocktail (created in 1926) has a creamy maraschino cherry center. This is coated in ground peanuts and milk chocolate.
The company also makes three types of Owyhee Butter Toffee. Plus, they have about 20 kinds of bulk candy. You can buy all their candy directly from the Idaho Candy Company website.
What Does "Owyhee" Mean?
Many of the company's candies are labeled "Owyhee." This name comes from the Owyhee River and Owyhee County, Idaho. These places are located close to where the candy factory is.
