If You Can Dream is a special song made just for the Disney Princess world. It was the first song written specifically for this popular group of characters. Robbie Buchanan and Jay Landers created and produced the song. It first appeared on the album Disney Princess: The Ultimate Song Collection.
The song is sung from the point of view of the first eight official Disney Princesses. You can find it on many Disney music CDs. Its music video is often an extra on Disney Princess DVDs. Sometimes it's even a Sing-Along video. The song was also shown many times on Disney Channel.
Other artists have covered this song. Teen country singer Ashley Gearing made her own version. A shorter version is used in the Disney on Ice show Princess Wishes. It plays as the grand finale of that show. More recently, it's the exit song for Disney Illuminations. This is a nighttime show at Disneyland Paris.
Meet the Singers
This song features the voices of many talented actresses. They bring the Disney Princesses to life through music.
- Susan Stevens Logan sings as Snow White and Cinderella.
- Christie Houser sings as Princess Aurora.
- Jodi Benson sings as Princess Ariel.
- Paige O'Hara sings as Belle.
- Judy Kuhn sings as Pocahontas.
- Lea Salonga sings as Princess Jasmine and Mulan.
About the Song's Lyrics
A cool thing about "If You Can Dream" is that most of the original voice actresses returned. They sang their princess roles again for this song. However, the original voices for Snow White, Cinderella, and Princess Aurora were not able to return. Lea Salonga sang for both Princess Jasmine and Mulan in their original movies. She reprised both of these roles in "If You Can Dream."
Each princess sings lines that connect to her own story. For example, Cinderella sings about her glass slipper. Belle's line mentions a rose, just like in her movie. Pocahontas sings about the "colors of the wind." Jasmine's part talks about "a whole new world." These lines help you remember each princess's adventure.
In the Princess Wishes Disney on Ice show, some lyrics are changed. The line about "colors of the wind" becomes "music of the wind." This is because Pocahontas is not in that specific show. Also, Belle's lines about the rose are changed. They become "Once upon a dream/Wish and it will seem." These new lines are sung by Princess Aurora in the show. This gives Aurora a solo part.
The Music Video
The music video for "If You Can Dream" is a montage. This means it's a collection of short clips put together. The video uses footage from the movies of the featured princesses. These movies include Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. It also features The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Finally, clips from Pocahontas and Mulan are included.
The company Industrial Light & Magic edited the footage. They worked to make the princesses' mouth movements match the song. This is called lipsyncing. It makes it look like the princesses are actually singing the song.
