Iman Vellani (born August 2002) is a Canadian actress and comic book writer. She is best known for playing Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has starred in the TV show Ms. Marvel (2022) and the movie The Marvels (2023). She also voiced Kamala Khan in the animated series Marvel Zombies (2025). Besides acting, Iman has also written comic books about Ms. Marvel.

Early Life and Interests

Iman Vellani was born in August 2002 in Karachi, Pakistan. When she was one year old, her family moved to Canada. She grew up in Canada as an Ismaili Muslim. Iman went to Unionville High School in Markham, Ontario.

Before becoming an actress, Iman loved comic books and superheroes. She was even part of the TIFF Next Wave Committee at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. She had planned to study integrated media at the Ontario College of Art & Design University. However, her acting career began during her last year of high school.

Becoming a Superhero Actress

In September 2020, it was announced that Iman Vellani would play the superhero Kamala Khan for Marvel Studios and Disney+. Kamala Khan is also known as Ms. Marvel.

Iman's aunt saw a casting call for the role and told her about it. Iman sent in a video of herself and was later asked to audition in Los Angeles. She had two more auditions, one in person and one online. During her online audition, she showed everyone her room, which was full of Avengers posters and Marvel items. This showed how much she loved the characters, just like Kamala Khan.

Starring as Ms. Marvel

On June 8, 2022, Ms. Marvel premiered on Disney+. This was Iman Vellani's first time acting on screen. Both the show and her acting as Ms. Marvel received a lot of praise. Critics said she truly captured the spirit of Kamala Khan. They called her "an adorable bundle of charisma" and praised her "youthful energy." The miniseries had six episodes and finished on July 13, 2022.

For her amazing performance in Ms. Marvel, Iman won a Saturn Award. She was also nominated for other awards. In July 2022, she also appeared as Kamala Khan in an interactive experience called Avengers: Quantum Encounter on the Disney Wish cruise ship.

Continuing the Marvel Story

Iman Vellani played Kamala Khan again in the 2023 movie The Marvels. This film continued the story from Ms. Marvel and was also a sequel to the 2019 movie Captain Marvel. The Marvels was released in November 2023.

While the movie received mixed reviews, Iman's performance was often highlighted as a favorite part. Many critics said she "stole the show" and praised her humor and emotional acting alongside the older heroes.

Iman also voiced an animated version of Kamala Khan for the Disney+ series Marvel Zombies, which was released in 2025. This series is based on an episode from the animated show What If...?.

Other Acting Roles

Beyond Marvel, Iman Vellani has taken on other acting roles. In November 2024, she was cast in a film called Shiver. By April 2025, she was also cast in another film titled Mouse.

Writing Comic Books

In August 2023, Iman Vellani started a new part of her career: writing comic books. She co-wrote a four-issue comic series called Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant with Sabir Pirzada. This series explored Ms. Marvel's new identity as both an Inhuman and a mutant, and her joining the X-Men.

Fans and critics praised Iman's writing. They noted that her deep knowledge and love for Kamala Khan shone through in the stories. After The New Mutant finished in November 2023, a sequel series called Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace was announced. Iman and Sabir Pirzada returned as writers for this series, with the first issue released on March 6, 2024.

Iman continued to write more Ms. Marvel comics with Pirzada. This included Ms. Marvel Annual #1 in July 2024, which was part of the Infinity Watch storyline. She also wrote a short story for the Marvel 85th Anniversary Special in August 2024, celebrating Marvel Comics' 85th birthday.
