The Indian River is a river located in western New Hampshire, in the United States. It stretches about 12.8-mile-long (20.6 km). This river is a smaller stream that flows into a larger one, called the Mascoma River.

The Mascoma River then joins the even bigger Connecticut River. Eventually, all this water travels all the way to Long Island Sound, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Where the River Starts and Ends

The Indian River begins in the southern part of a town called Dorchester. It starts high up, at about 1,800 ft (550 m) above sea level. From there, it flows south through a wide valley. This valley is located to the west of a mountain known as Mount Cardigan.

Journey Through Towns

As the river continues its journey, it reaches the center of Canaan. In Canaan, the river changes direction. It turns west and soon after, it meets the Mascoma River. The Indian River's journey ends when it joins the Mascoma River in Canaan. This meeting point is about 856 ft (261 m) above sea level.

Roads Along the River

If you were to travel alongside the Indian River, you would find roads nearby. For the part of the river that flows south, New Hampshire Route 118 follows closely. When the river reaches Canaan and turns west towards the Mascoma River, U.S. Route 4 is also very close by.
