Exploring Indiera Baja's Past
Indiera Baja has a long and interesting history. Because it was so hard to reach, with its rough terrain and thick forests, it became a safe place for many people.
A Refuge for the Taíno People
For centuries, the Taínos, who were the native people of Puerto Rico, found safety in Indiera Baja. When Spain and other European countries began to colonize Puerto Rico in the 1400s, many Taínos escaped to these hidden mountain areas. Indiera Baja offered them a place to live freely away from the new settlers.
Becoming Part of the United States
Later, in 1898, a big change happened for Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This agreement was part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Population Changes Over Time
The United States government started taking a count of the people, called a census, in Puerto Rico. The first census in 1899 showed that 933 people lived in Indiera Baja. The population has changed over the years, sometimes growing and sometimes shrinking.
