Ingrid Haebler (born June 20, 1929 – died May 14, 2023) was a famous Austrian pianist. She was known for her many recordings, especially of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music. People still consider her recordings of Mozart's piano sonatas to be some of the best ever made.

Early Life and Musical Journey

Ingrid Haebler was born in Vienna, Austria, on June 20, 1929. When she was just three weeks old, her parents moved to Poland. She lived there until she was ten years old.

Her family's home was a special place where many famous musicians often visited. These included pianists like Claudio Arrau and Robert Casadesus, and violinist Bronisław Huberman. It was Robert Casadesus who first noticed Ingrid's amazing talent for playing the piano. He believed she would have a great future in music.

Starting Her Studies

When World War II began, Ingrid's family moved to Salzburg, Austria. At just eleven years old, she gave her first public performance there.

She began studying music at the Salzburg Mozarteum with Professor Heinz Scholz. She finished her studies in 1949 with high honors for her Mozart playing. During this time, she also developed a love for music from the late 1700s and early 1900s. In the same year, Ingrid won the Lilli Lehmann Medal from the International Mozarteum Foundation.

A Career in Music

Throughout the 1950s, Ingrid Haebler played a wide range of music, from Johann Sebastian Bach to Igor Stravinsky. She traveled all over the world, performing in Europe, North Africa, Australia, the United States, Canada, and Japan. Starting in 1954, she performed every year at the famous Salzburg Festival.

Famous Recordings

Ingrid Haebler made many recordings from the 1950s to the 1980s. She recorded all of Mozart's piano sonatas. She also recorded most of Mozart's piano concertos, sometimes even writing her own special parts called cadenzas. She also recorded all of Franz Schubert's piano sonatas.

Haebler was one of the first Austrian musicians to try playing old music on period instruments. These are instruments made to be like the ones used when the music was first written. She recorded keyboard concertos by Johann Christian Bach on a fortepiano, which is an early type of piano. She also recorded some of Mozart's early keyboard concertos using these older instruments. Her recordings of Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven with the violinist Henryk Szeryng are especially valued by music lovers.

Ingrid Haebler passed away on May 14, 2023, at the age of 93.
