Inish Turk Beg (which means "small island of the wild boar" in Irish) is a special private island. You can find it in Clew Bay, off the west coast of Ireland, in County Mayo.
From 2003 to 2013, the island was owned by Nadim Sadek. He is an Irish-Egyptian businessman. Inish Turk Beg is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) by road from the towns of Newport and Westport. It's also about 67 kilometers (42 miles) from Ireland West Airport Knock.
Exploring Inish Turk Beg's Location
Inish Turk Beg is one of the biggest islands in Clew Bay. This bay is a beautiful area with many islands.
- To the south of the bay, you can see the holy mountain of Croagh Patrick.
- To the north, there's the Nephin Beg mountain range.
- To the east, you'll find the towns of Newport and Westport in County Mayo.
- To the west is Clare Island, which is the largest island in Clew Bay.
A Look Back: Inish Turk Beg's History
Islands on the west coast of Ireland often get their names from things found there long ago. For example, Inishbofin means "island of the white cow."
For a long time, the people on Inish Turk Beg made a living from farming. They grew crops like potatoes and raised animals such as sheep, pigs, and cattle. The way they grew potatoes left a special "rippled" pattern on the land. Inish Turk Beg was also once home to skilled boat-builders.
Modern Changes on the Island
In 2003, a businessman named Nadim Sadek bought the island. Over the next ten years, he put a lot of effort into improving it. He built new roads, jetties (small docks for boats), and systems for water and waste.
Nadim Sadek also started many different businesses on the island. These included:
- Places for visitors to stay
- A company that made smoked fish
- A place for music recording
- A special farm for Connemara Ponies
- Programs for artists to live and work there
- A business making malt whiskey
In 2013, Nadim Sadek sold the island for €4,000,000. However, he kept the rights to the ideas and businesses he created on the island.
