What Was the Interlaken District?
The Interlaken District was a political area in the Bernese Oberland region. This region is known for its beautiful mountains and lakes. The district was created a long time ago. It helped manage the towns and villages within its borders.
From District to Administrative Region
In 2010, Switzerland changed how its districts were organized. The Interlaken District stopped being a separate district. Its towns and villages became part of a new, larger area. This new area is called the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district. So, while the name "Interlaken" is still used, the old district no longer exists as it once did.
Geography of the Area
The area where the Interlaken District was located is very scenic. It is in the heart of the Swiss Alps. This region is famous for its tall mountains, deep valleys, and clear blue lakes.
Lakes and Mountains
Two large lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, are key features of this area. The town of Interlaken sits right between them. Many famous mountains are also found here. These include the Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch. These mountains attract many tourists from all over the world.
Towns and Villages
The Interlaken District included 23 different municipalities. Each municipality is like a small town or village with its own local government. Some of the well-known places in the former district included:
- Interlaken: The capital town, famous for tourism.
- Grindelwald: A popular village for skiing and hiking.
- Lauterbrunnen: Known for its many waterfalls.
- Brienz: Famous for its wood carving traditions.
These towns and villages are still popular places to visit today. They offer many activities for people who love nature and outdoor sports.
