The International Peace Garden is a special park. It covers about 3.65 square miles (9.5 km²) and sits right on the border between Canada and the United States. This garden is a symbol of the friendly relationship between these two countries. It was created on July 14, 1932.

The slogan Peace Garden State comes from this very park. It was added to vehicle registration plates of North Dakota in 1956. The next year, North Dakota officially made it a state nickname.

What Can You See at the Garden?

The garden is famous for its beautiful flowers. Workers plant over 150,000 flowers there every year! You can also see a huge 18-foot (5.5 m) floral clock and lovely fountains.

For many years, there were two tall concrete towers that stood over the border. They had a peace chapel at their base. The chapel walls had famous quotes about peace. Sadly, these towers became unsafe due to weather damage and were taken down in 2017. A new tower is planned to be built there soon.

The Arma Sifton bells are a set of 14 bells. They were a gift from a church in Brandon, Manitoba, in 1972. The tower for the bells was built by veterans from North Dakota in 1976.

A part of the garden also holds pieces from the World Trade Center. These pieces are a reminder of the events of September 11, 2001.

Buildings and Activities

The Masonic Auditorium was finished in 1981. It is shaped like a Masonic symbol and can seat 2,000 people. It was built by groups of Freemasons from Manitoba and North Dakota.

The Peace Garden is a popular spot for youth camps in the summer. It hosts the International Music Camp and the Legion Athletic Camp. Since 1964, it has also hosted the International Hamfest. This is a yearly meeting for people who enjoy Amateur Radio.

You can also find the North American Game Warden Museum at the garden. This museum teaches about wildlife officers.

The park is located in the Turtle Mountain plateau. This area has a different climate, landscape, and wildlife than the flat lands around it.

How to Visit the Garden

The International Peace Garden is located north of Dunseith, North Dakota. It is also near Boissevain, Manitoba, in Canada. You need to pay an admission fee to enter the park.

Visitors from either Canada or the U.S. can enter the park without going through customs first. You can walk freely throughout the park and even cross the international border inside the garden. However, when you leave the garden, you must go through customs. This means you will need to show your passport or other travel documents to enter the country you are going to.

There is also a small airport nearby called International Peace Garden Airport. It is on the U.S. side of the border.
