Inverness Airport is an international airport located at Dalcross. This is a place north-east of the city of Inverness in Scotland. It is owned by a company called Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL).
The airport is the main way for people to travel to the north of Scotland. It has many flights to different parts of the United Kingdom. There are also some flights to places in Continental Europe. Some special charter and freight flights also use the airport. In 2016, about 780,000 passengers traveled through Inverness Airport.
Airport History
Like many airports in the Highlands and Islands, Inverness Airport started as a military air base. It was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. After the war, in 1947, it was changed to be used for regular civilian flights.
Busy Routes and Passengers
Inverness Airport is a busy place! Many people fly from here to other cities. In 2009, the most popular flight destination was London Gatwick Airport. Over 224,000 passengers flew to London Gatwick that year. Other popular places to fly to included London Luton Airport and Bristol Airport.
The airport also connects to other Scottish islands like Stornoway Airport and Kirkwall Airport. This helps people travel easily around Scotland.
