History of Irma

The Village of Irma started in 1908. This happened when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway built its tracks through the area. Irma officially became a village on May 30, 1912.

It is believed that the village was named after the daughter of General William Wainwright. He was an important person at the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.

Irma's downtown area has had three big fires. These fires happened in 1911, 1931, and 1963. After the 1931 fire, most of the buildings on the main street (now called 50 Street) were rebuilt.

Irma was also home to Alberta's very first rural high school. A new school building opened in Irma on November 4, 2019, replacing the old one.
