Mining History
Iron Mountain has a long and interesting history of iron mining. People have been digging for iron ore here for a very long time. The iron found here is mostly in the form of special rocks called magnetite and hematite.
Mining at Iron Mountain started way back in the 1850s. This was when early settlers, known as Mormon pioneers, led by Brigham Young, began to extract iron from the mountain. They needed iron for tools and other important items.
You can learn more about this early mining history at the Iron Mission State Park. This park is located nearby in Cedar City, Utah. Iron Mountain is one of three main peaks in the area known as the Iron Mountain Mining District.
