Isabela barrio-pueblo is a special part of Isabela, Puerto Rico. It's like the main town center or downtown area. This is where the local government buildings are located. In 2010, about 7,826 people lived here.
Just like in Spain, many towns in Puerto Rico have a central area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, special celebrations called Fiestas patronales (which means "patron saint festivals") are held in this central square.
The Heart of Town: Plaza and Church
The main square, also known as the central plaza, is a lively spot for everyone. It's where people gather for fun events or just to hang out and chat from morning till night. Long ago, Spanish laws from the early 1800s, called the Laws of the Indies, said that these plazas should be big enough for celebrations. They also said that the streets nearby should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
In Isabela barrio-pueblo, you'll find the Manuel Corchado y Juarb recreational plaza. Right across from this main plaza is the Parroquia San Antonio de Padua. This is a Roman Catholic church named after Anthony of Padua. The church was first built between 1819 and 1824. It was damaged during a big earthquake in 1918. The church you see today was finished in 1924. It was built using strong reinforced concrete. The last time it was updated was in 1998.
A Look Back in Time
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the U.S. In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that 881 people lived in the Pueblo area of Isabela.
