Ishan Kishan (born 18 July 1998) is a talented Indian cricketer. He plays for the Indian national cricket team as a wicket-keeper and a batsman. Ishan made his first international appearance in March 2021 against England.

He plays for the Jharkhand team in Indian domestic cricket. In the exciting Indian Premier League (IPL), he currently plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In December 2022, Ishan made history! He scored an amazing 210 runs in just 131 balls in a One Day International (ODI) match against Bangladesh. This made him the youngest cricketer ever to score a double century in an ODI. He was also the first player to turn his very first ODI century into a double century.

Ishan was also the captain of India's team for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was part of the Indian team that won the 2023 Asia Cup.

Early Life and Cricket Beginnings

Ishan Kishan was born on 18 July 1998 in Patna, Bihar. His father, Pranav Kumar Pandey, is a builder. Because of some issues with cricket registration in Bihar, Ishan started playing cricket for the nearby state of Jharkhand. This helped him begin his journey in professional cricket.

Domestic Cricket Journey

Ishan Kishan has achieved many milestones in domestic cricket. On 6 November 2016, he scored a huge 273 runs against Delhi in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy. This was a new record for a player from Jharkhand in that competition.

He was the top scorer for Jharkhand in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, scoring 484 runs. He also led the runs for Jharkhand in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy, with 405 runs.

In October 2018, he scored a century in the final of the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. In February 2019, he hit two centuries in a row in the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored 173 runs in the 2020–21 Vijay Hazare Trophy, helping his team achieve a record score of 422.

In October 2024, Ishan Kishan was chosen to be the captain of the Jharkhand cricket team for the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy season. He had led the team before in 2018-19. He aims to guide the young team after some experienced players retired.

Indian Premier League (IPL) Career

Ishan Kishan has had an exciting journey in the Indian Premier League.

  • Starting Out: In 2016, the Gujarat Lions team bought him in the IPL auction. He stayed with them for two years.
  • Joining Mumbai Indians: In 2018, the Mumbai Indians bought him. He had a great first season, scoring 275 runs quickly.
  • Breakthrough Season: The 2020 IPL was a huge success for Ishan. He was the highest scorer for Mumbai Indians with 516 runs. He also won an award for hitting the most sixes that season. One memorable game was when he scored 99 runs in just 58 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
  • Most Expensive Player: Before the 2022 IPL, Mumbai Indians bought him again for a huge amount of money. This made him one of the most expensive Indian players in the auction. He continued to play for Mumbai Indians in 2023 and 2024.
  • New Team: In November 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him in the 2025 IPL auction.

International Cricket Highlights

Ishan Kishan's international career began in 2021.

  • T20I Debut: In February 2021, he was selected for India's Twenty20 International (T20I) team to play against England. He made his debut on 14 March 2021, scoring 56 runs from 32 balls. He even won the "Player of the Match" award!
  • ODI Debut: In June 2021, he was chosen for India's One Day International (ODI) team for a tour of Sri Lanka. He made his ODI debut in July, scoring 59 runs from 42 balls.
  • World Cup Selection: In September 2021, he was named in India's team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
  • Record-Breaking Double Century: In December 2022, Ishan made history during India's tour of Bangladesh. He scored an incredible 210 runs from just 131 balls in an ODI. He reached 200 runs in only 126 balls, breaking Chris Gayle's record. He also became the youngest player to score an ODI double century.   • 2023 World Cup: In September 2023, Ishan was part of India's squad for the 50-over World Cup. He played in the first match against Australia. In the second game against Afghanistan, he scored 47 runs.
