Sultan Ismail Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Yahya Petra was the 28th Sultan of Kelantan. He ruled from 30 March 1979 to 13 September 2010. He became Sultan after his father, Sultan Yahya Petra, passed away. Sultan Ismail Petra died on 28 September 2019, at the age of 69. He was buried at the Kelantan Royal Mausoleum. His eldest son, Sultan Muhammad V, became the new Sultan on 13 September 2010.

Early Life of Sultan Ismail Petra
Sultan Ismail Petra was born on 11 November 1949. His birthplace was Istana Jahar in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He was the only son of Sultan Yahya Petra and Raja Perempuan Zainab II. He grew up with four older sisters.
He went to Maktab Sultan Ismail in Kota Bharu for his secondary education. He also had a special teacher for English. In 2002, he received an honorary doctorate in Political Science from a university in Thailand.
Becoming Crown Prince and Regent
Sultan Ismail Petra was named the Crown Prince (Tengku Mahkota) of Kelantan. This happened on 11 November 1967. The ceremony took place at Istana Balai Besar in Kota Bharu.
He also served as the Regent (Pemangku Raja) of Kelantan. He took on this role when his father became the King of Malaysia. This was from 1975 until his father's death in 1979. A Regent is someone who rules when the main ruler is away or unable to do their duties.
Career Before Becoming Sultan
In 1967, Sultan Ismail Petra began his career. He worked as an officer in administration. He spent a year at the Kelantan State Secretary Office. The next year, he worked at the Land and District Office in Kota Bharu.
Sultan of Kelantan
Sultan Ismail Petra became the Sultan of Kelantan on 30 March 1979. His official crowning ceremony was held a year later. This took place on 30 March 1980. The ceremony was at the Throne Room of the Istana Balai Besar in Kota Bharu.
Military Roles
Sultan Ismail Petra held several important military positions. In 1974, he became an Honorary Major in the Territorial Army Regiment. Two years later, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. In 1988, he became an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel. By 1997, he was appointed Honorary Major-General. He was also the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Artillery Regiment.
Other Important Positions
Sultan Ismail Petra was the first Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. He was appointed to this role on 10 August 2008. A Chancellor is usually the head of a university.
Marriage and Children
Sultan Ismail Petra married Raja Perempuan Tengku Anis binti Tengku Abdul Hamid. They got married on 4 December 1968. They were both 19 years old at the time. They had four children together:
- Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra (who later became Sultan Muhammad V). He was born on 6 October 1969. He married Sultanah Nur Diana Petra Abdullah in 2010.
- Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra. He was born on 20 January 1974. He married Sofie Louise Johansson in 2019.
- Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra. He was born on 7 April 1978. He married Manohara Odelia Pinot in 2008.
- Tengku Amalin A’ishah Putri. She was born on 26 June 1984. She married Pengiran Muda Abdul Qawi ibni Pengiran Muda Mohamed Bolkiah. He is a member of the Bruneian royal family. They have four children:
- Pengiran Anak Tengku Afeefah Musyafaah Bolkiah Putri (born 2014)
- Pengiran Anak Tengku Azzahra Iffatul Bolkiah Putri (born 2016)
- Pengiran Anak Tengku Zaafirah Muizzah Bolkiah Putri (born 2020)

Sultan Ismail Petra also had a second wife, Cik Puan Elia Suhana Ahmad. They married on 23 December 2007.
Health and Succession
Sultan Ismail Petra became unwell in May 2009. Because of his health, a group of medical experts checked on him. They decided that he was not able to continue ruling the state.
Due to this, his eldest son, Crown Prince Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, was appointed as the new Sultan. This happened on 13 September 2010.
Death and State Funeral
Sultan Ismail Petra passed away on 28 September 2019. He was 69 years old. He died at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Bharu. The Chief Minister of Kelantan, Dato' Ahmad Yakob, officially announced his passing.
A state funeral was held on the same day. Many important people attended to pay their respects. These included the King and Queen of Malaysia, the Sultan of Brunei, and other royal family members. The Deputy Prime Minister was also present. Sultan Ismail Petra was laid to rest near his father's grave. This was at the Langgar Royal Mausoleum in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
