Early Life and Education
Muhammad V was born as Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra bin Tengku Ismail Petra in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. This was on 6 October 1969. He is the oldest son of Sultan Ismail Petra and Raja Perempuan Tengku Anis.
He started his schooling at Fatima Convent kindergarten from 1974 to 1975. He then went to SK Sultan Ismail (1) in Kota Bharu for primary school. For secondary school, he attended Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom to study at Oakham School in England from 1983 to 1989.
After that, he continued his studies at St Cross College, Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. He focused on diplomatic studies and graduated in 1991. He also studied in Canada, Germany, and at the European Business School London in the United Kingdom.
Becoming Crown Prince of Kelantan
Tengku Faris was named the Tengku Mahkota, which means Crown Prince, of Kelantan on 6 October 1985. He was officially given this title in a special ceremony in Kota Bharu on 6 October 1987.
Serving as Regent of Kelantan
On 14 May 2009, his father, Sultan Ismail Petra, became very ill. He was taken to a hospital in Singapore. Because his father was unable to rule, Tengku Faris was appointed as the Regent of Kelantan on 25 May. A Regent is someone who rules in place of the monarch when the monarch is unable to do so.
His Reign as Sultan and King
Sultan of Kelantan
On 13 September 2010, Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra was officially made the 29th Al-Sultan of Kelantan. This happened because the state's rules say a ruler cannot continue if they are unable to rule for more than a year. He chose the new royal name Sultan Muhammad V.
Sultan Muhammad V attended his first meeting of the Conference of Rulers in October 2010. This showed that other rulers accepted him as the new Sultan.
As Sultan, he holds important military roles. He is the Colonel in Chief of the Royal Intelligence Corps and the Royal Artillery Regiment in Malaysia. Since 23 November 2022, he has also been the Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK).
Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong
Sultan Muhammad V was chosen as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong in October 2011. He served in this role from 13 December 2011 until he was elected as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 13 December 2016. The Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong helps the King and can take over if the King is away or unwell.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia)
On 14 October 2016, the Conference of Rulers elected Sultan Muhammad V to be the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This means he became the head of state for all of Malaysia. His rule began on 13 December 2016, taking over from Abdul Halim, the Sultan of Kedah. Sultan Muhammad V was officially installed as the fifteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia on 24 April 2017. The ceremony took place at the Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur.
During his time as King, his younger brother, Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra, served as the Regent of Kelantan. This allowed Sultan Muhammad V to focus on his duties as the King of Malaysia.
In 2018, he was made an Honorary Fellow of his former college, St Cross College, Oxford.
His reign as King saw a big change in Malaysia's government in 2018. The long-ruling Barisan Nasional government was replaced by the Pakatan Harapan government. Sultan Muhammad V also granted a royal pardon to Anwar Ibrahim, who is now the Prime Minister of Malaysia. This allowed Anwar Ibrahim to return to politics.
Sultan Muhammad V made history by being the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong to step down from the throne. This happened on 6 January 2019, even though his term was supposed to end later.
