Muhammad V (born 6 October 1969) is the 29th Sultan of Kelantan. He became Sultan in 2010. Before that, he was the King of Malaysia from 2016 until 2019.
He was named Sultan of Kelantan on 13 September 2010. He took over from his father, Sultan Ismail Petra, who was unwell after a stroke. Sultan Muhammad V then became the King of Malaysia on 13 December 2016. On 6 January 2019, he became the first King of Malaysia to step down from the throne.

Early Life and Education
Muhammad V was born Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra bin Tengku Ismail Petra in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. His birthday is 6 October 1969. He is the oldest son of Sultan Ismail Petra and Raja Perempuan Tengku Anis.
He went to kindergarten from 1974 to 1975. He then attended SK Sultan Ismail (1) in Kota Bharu from 1976 to 1981. For secondary school, he went to Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom to study at Oakham School from 1983 to 1989.
He continued his studies at St Cross College, Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. He studied about diplomacy and finished in 1991. He also studied in Canada, Germany, and at the European Business School in London.
Crown Prince of Kelantan (1985–2010)
Tengku Faris was made the Tengku Mahkota, or Crown Prince, of Kelantan on 6 October 1985. He was officially given this role in a ceremony in Kota Bharu on 6 October 1987.
On 14 May 2009, his father, Sultan Ismail Petra, had a serious stroke. He was taken to a hospital in Singapore. Because his father was away and unwell, Tengku Faris was appointed the Regent of Kelantan on 25 May. A Regent is someone who rules in place of the King or Sultan when they cannot.
Sultan of Kelantan (2010–Present)
On 13 September 2010, Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra was named the 29th Al-Sultan of Kelantan. This happened because the state's rules say a Sultan cannot rule if they are unable to for more than a year. He chose the royal name Sultan Muhammad V.
Sultan Muhammad V attended the 222nd Meeting of the Conference of Rulers in October 2010. This was his first time as a full member. This meeting showed that other rulers accepted him as the new Sultan.
Sultan Muhammad V holds important roles in the military. He is the Colonel in Chief of the Royal Intelligence Corps and the Royal Artillery Regiment in Malaysia.
Since 23 November 2022, he has also been the Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK). This is part of his duties as the Sultan of Kelantan.
Deputy King of Malaysia (2011–2016)
Sultan Muhammad V was chosen to be the Deputy King of Malaysia in October 2011. He served in this position from 13 December 2011. He continued in this role until he was chosen as the King of Malaysia on 13 December 2016.
King of Malaysia (2016–2019)
Sultan Muhammad V was chosen by the Conference of Rulers on 14 October 2016. He became the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is the head of state of Malaysia. His time as King began on 13 December 2016. He took over from Abdul Halim, who was the Sultan of Kedah. Sultan Muhammad V was officially installed as the fifteenth King of Malaysia on 24 April 2017. The ceremony took place in Kuala Lumpur.
While Sultan Muhammad V was the King, his younger brother, Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra, served as the Regent of Kelantan.
During his time as King, Malaysia saw a big change in its government in 2018. The ruling Barisan Nasional government, led by former Prime Minister Najib Razak, was replaced by the Pakatan Harapan government. This new government was led by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Sultan Muhammad V also granted a royal pardon to Anwar Ibrahim, who is now the Prime Minister of Malaysia. This pardon allowed Anwar Ibrahim to return to politics.
Sultan Muhammad V made history by becoming the first King of Malaysia to step down from the throne. This happened on 6 January 2019. His term was supposed to end later, in December 2021.
Personal Life
On 15 November 2004, Sultan Muhammad V married Tengku Zubaidah binti Tengku Norudin. They later divorced in 2008.
He was the first King of Malaysia to rule without a Queen consort.
On 30 October 2010, he married Sultanah Nur Diana Petra Abdullah. She was later named the Sultanah of Kelantan on 2 August 2022.
In 2018, Sultan Muhammad V married Oksana Voevodina. They had a son named Tengku Ismail Leon Petra on 21 May 2019. They divorced on 1 July 2019.
