Early Life and Education
Nik Abdul Aziz was born in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, in 1931. He was the second of five children. He grew up with his father, who was a blacksmith.
His journey in Islamic studies began at traditional pondok schools in Kelantan and Terengganu. He then traveled to India and studied at Darul Uloom Deoband for five years. Later, he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Al-Azhar University in Egypt.
After returning from Egypt, Nik Aziz became a teacher at various religious schools in Kelantan. He also taught at mosques and pondok schools in other states. He became known as a wise and respected Islamic scholar, earning the nickname "Tok Guru," which means 'Master Teacher' in Malay.
Political Journey
Nik Aziz joined the PAS in 1967. In the same year, he won a special election for the Kelantan Hilir seat in the Malaysian Parliament. He held this seat, which was later renamed Pengkalan Chepa, until 1986.
In 1986, he won a seat in the Kelantan State Assembly. Four years later, in 1990, PAS won control of the Kelantan state government. As the party leader in the state, Nik Aziz became the Menteri Besar of Kelantan. He also became the Spiritual Leader of PAS in 1991.
Nik Aziz's government in Kelantan was re-elected four times. He was the Menteri Besar for 23 years, until he retired in 2013. During his time as leader, he sometimes had different ideas on how to lead the state compared to the national government. He believed in politics that included everyone, not just one race. He also gained support from many non-Muslims in Malaysia.
Retirement and Passing
After the 2013 election, where PAS again won in Kelantan, Nik Aziz announced his retirement as Menteri Besar. His former deputy, Ahmad Yaakob, took over his position.
In his last two years, Nik Aziz became very ill with prostate cancer. He passed away on February 12, 2015, at his home in Kota Bharu. The next day, more than 10,000 people attended his funeral at his local mosque.
