History of Ithaca, Nebraska

Ithaca was founded in 1866. It was named after Ithaca, New York, a city that was the original home of one of the first settlers. Interestingly, the name "Ithaca" also appears in ancient Greek stories. It is the name of the mythical island kingdom where the hero Odysseus is from, in Homer's famous epic poem, the Odyssey.

Ithaca is a small village. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers a total area of about 0.23 square miles (0.60 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large bodies of water within the village limits.
