A Look Back: Itmann's History
Itmann started as a busy mining town. In 1916, the Pocahontas Fuel Company built about 120 homes for its workers. The Itmann mine opened in 1918. It was named after the company's president, Isaac T. Mann, or I. T. Mann, which was later shortened to Itmann.
The town also had a large stone company store and a single-room schoolhouse.
Mining Success and Changes
During the 1950s and 1960s, the Itmann mine was the most productive coal mine in West Virginia. The coal found there, called Pocahontas No. 3, was some of the best in the world. It was known for its high energy content.
By the 1980s, the Island Creek Coal Company was mining in Itmann. Around 500 miners worked there. A bigger school was built, and the old single-room school became a meeting hall for the UMWA (United Mine Workers of America).
Even famous people visited Itmann. During his campaign, John F. Kennedy went into one of the Itmann mines. He was visiting the nearby city of Mullens, which was very busy at the time.
Mine Incident
On December 16, 1972, there was a methane gas explosion in Itmann Mine #3. This sad event caused the deaths of five miners and injured three others. Over its history, the mines at Itmann produced a huge amount of coal, more than 26 million tons.
Itmann Today
Today, Itmann is a quieter community. It still has a post office and a church. The Council on Aging, which helps older people, has its offices in the building that used to be the larger school. The original single-room schoolhouse, which became the UMWA hall, is not used anymore.
The Itmann Company Store and Office is still standing. It's a very important building and is listed as a historical landmark in West Virginia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. For a while, part of the company store was used as a shelter for people without homes, but now it is empty. There is also a welding shop in Itmann that is still open. It makes parts for escalators used in local mines.
