Pineville is a small town in West Virginia, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Wyoming County, West Virginia. The town is located right next to the Guyandotte River. In 2020, about 648 people lived there.

History of Pineville

Pineville was first settled by William Short in 1853. Later, in 1863, Hiram Clay also settled nearby. The area was once known as Castlerock. Its post office was even called Rock Castle.

The town got its current name, Pineville, because of the many pine trees in the area. It officially became a town in 1907. That same year, Pineville became the county seat. This meant it became the center for the county's government. It took over from another town called Oceana.

A famous natural landmark in Pineville is Castle Rock. This huge sandstone formation is what Rockcastle Creek is named after. The Wyoming County Courthouse, built in 1916, is also an important historical building. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1960, a very important person visited Pineville. Senator John F. Kennedy stopped by on April 29. About 800 people came to see him. Kennedy spoke on the local radio station, WWYO. He then walked with the Pineville High School (West Virginia) band to the courthouse. There, he gave a speech to the crowd.

The Pinnacle Drive Inn has been a local favorite since the late 1950s. Carolyn Clay, a well-known person from Pineville, used to run it. It closed for a short time in 2017. But it reopened later that year under new owners. They wanted to honor Carolyn Clay and her service to the community.
